Tucked a mere 15 minutes from the buzz—and bourbon—of downtown Louisville, Kentucky, Jan and Tammy Donelson’s rental cabin, dubbed “Captain’s Cabin,” offers a rare blend of history, privacy and soul-soothing comfort. Surrounded by eight acres of woodland, this restored Appalachian log cabin (circa 1814) invites you to slow down and reconnect with nature, without sacrificing the conveniences of city living.
Though it boasts an antique aesthetic, the cabin is perfectly comfortable. After acquiring the house when they purchased the property in 2010, Jan and Tammy set about restoring the space with intention, combining historic details with modern livability. It’s no wonder it’s been the set for movies like “The Love Hunt” and “Hidden Family Secrets.”
“Jan, with his architectural and log home background, was able to influence the design,” Tammy explains. “There were some elements that weren’t period correct or original, and he was able to address that.” Jan oversaw the installation of a new cedar shake roof with a vaulted ceiling and exposed timber beams, and he reconfigured the front porch for structural and historical accuracy.
Behind the front door (which opens with a skeleton key), the cabin’s interiors tell a story—from the hand-forged tools to the military reenactment replicas that reflect Jan and Tammy’s interest in the Lewis and Clark expedition. “Other than the replicas, everything we selected is a family heirloom or authentically antique,” Tammy proudly explains. “We thought, ‘We’re not going to sanitize this cabin and just use regular, cheap, generic furnishings.’”
The kitchen—custom-built by Cincinnati-based artisan cabinetmaker David T. Smith—has been thoughtfully designed to marry period style with practical utility. An induction cooktop, an oven, a dishwasher and a fully stocked pantry integrate seamlessly in the space that otherwise feels like a homestead belonging to the 19th century.
The bath, anchored by a free-standing clawfoot tub (there’s no shower here, and that’s on purpose), invites long, luxurious soaks. Jan laughs fondly when explaining that their guests are also treated to Tammy’s special selection of handcrafted soaps, scrubs and salts.
Captain’s Cabin is magical year-round, and Tammy believes each season has its own charm. Fall is the perfect backdrop for exploring the nearby Bourbon Trail at its most scenic. “Louisville is really underrated for its changing leaves,” she says.
Winter is perfect for hibernating indoors. You can curl up with coffee beside a roaring fire in the large stone fireplace and stream movies via the high-speed internet connection. In spring, Tammy says the garden really sings. The couple did the landscaping themselves and it bursts with black-eyed Susans, colorful coneflowers and limelight hydrangeas. In summer, you can fish in the lake, wade in the creek, explore the myriad hiking trails or hit the links on the nearby golf course.
“Guests love the nature that surrounds the cabin,” Tammy says. “They always mention that it’s a little piece of heaven, and they feel such calm and tranquility when visiting.” However, if you want to get out and explore, the location offers easy access to Louisville’s array of concerts, museums and, of course, the world-famous Kentucky Derby.
According to Tammy, you’re just six minutes from the highway and everywhere it can take you, but thanks to the serenity of the property, you’d never know it.
